Optional: After varnishing the model, you can apply a gloss highlight of ‘Ardcoat to give the jewels some shine. Whilst they bear similarities to other ranges – such as we’ve seen above in the comparison to Citadel – Two Thin Coats paints are still very different. They will appeal to both beginners and more experienced painters due to their slightly thinner mixes that do not sacrifice pigmentation strength. They require a little bit more work due to their slightly thinner recipe, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. These areas were then highlighted with Ushabti Bone (leave some of the previous highlight showing). Airbrush Scale 75 Viking Gold heavily over the model, leaving Necro Gold just in the lowest recesses. We would strongly recommend you give Two Thin Coats paints a go – grab one of the colour triads and try switching it with your usual recipe for a particular colour. I approached this very similarly to how I approach my Blood Angels and Sisters of Battle, by starting from a Mephiston Red prime – if most of the model is going to be red, it may as well start that way!
The next step is the real secret sauce. I created a reasonably dilute wash with a mix of Golden High Flow Acrylics Sepia (pretty much a more concentrated Agrax Earthshade), Golden High Flow Acrylics Dioxazine Purple, and the product formerly known as Future Floor Polish (Now Pledge Floor Care Finish, unless they’ve changed it again.) I wash the entire model in this color, removing excess where it pools too much. If you are working with Games Workshop paints, a mix of Druchii Violet, Agrax Earthshade and water/lahmian medium will work just fine. You will, however, be spending a lot more money to wash an entire army of Custodes using this method. At this point the gold is complete. It’s simple, but has a nice rich depth and purplish warmth to it.

Blood Games by Dan Abnett is a short story set within the Emperor’s Palace and what Custodes do when they’re not fighting. In the long, long ago when painting Custodes I used Citadel’s Retributor Armor. However, when using that paint for this Allarus Custodian I again had the same problems as I had previously. Retributor Armor doesn’t quite cover as well as it should, and it sort of tears as you apply it. Because of this, I switched over to Scale75’s Dwarven Gold. If you have access to this paint, it’s fantastic. It goes on smooth and coats like a dream. It’s good enough that you might even be able to skip the previous Charred Brown step. The Secret Sauce: Glaze the red armor with Flesh Tearers Contrast Paint (diluted with Contrast Medium)!
GW's new range matches with the old range are the matches claimed by GW. However, many of the paints do not match very closely at all and some mixing will be required to get close to the original colours. If you are trying to match old GW with new GW, you'd be better just getting Vallejo game color or coat d'arms for the closest match )

The secret to painting faces is watered-down, thin layers (mine were a bit chunky here). Go lightly when spraying primer so you don’t obscure detail. If you don’t get perfect coverage, that’s okay:
