In New Orleans, handsome drifter Chance Boudreaux (Jean-Claude Van Damme, Death Warrant, Maximum Risk) is approached by a beautiful girl (Yancy Butler, Drop Zone, Fast Money) looking for her father, a homeless vet.
Perhaps some of the darker footage again produces light black crush, but the stylization is such that it is tolerable. Still, Hard Target is likely best remembered for its ecstatic goofiness, marrying Woo’s wild formalist techniques with a host of late-’80s and early-’90s American action tropes.and his love of a fart machine that was on set, working with Henriksen and Vosloo and, of course, what JCVD was like to work with. Henriksen vs Van Damme is a nine minute interview with Lance Henriksen that goes over how he got his start doing live theater before making the movie to film work, how much he loved working with John Woo and how well they got along on set, getting some changes made to the script based on his input, his appreciation for New Orleans, adlibbing on the film, why his character uses the gun he has in the film, the musicality of the picture and Woo's work and trying to be authentic on camera.
Woo may not have made his best film here, but it was easily one of his best US outings, and he inarguably worked wonders with the ingredients he had, making Van Damme into an eminently cool action icon and certainly delivering his best flick, whilst crafting a bona fide action classic in the process. I switched over to the standard Blu-ray in the case afterward, and that disc is a decided downgrade in appearance. For example, there are entire parts that feel unfinished, while elsewhere the action sequences look unnecessarily prolonged. These fluctuations become even more pronounced in 1080p, and many of them actually begin to look oddly similar to their counterparts from the old Blu-ray release.In playback, the audio issues aren't fatally bad, and actually the flickering DV layer on the video may well prove to be the real death sentence to playback, certainly for those who haven't got the option to watch without. In one of the film’s most memorable scenes, a wounded target manages to slip free from his pursuers and get back to crowded streets, where he’s promptly ignored, if not outright scorned, by those he begs for help. He'd just come off his tour de force Chow Yun-Fat actioner, Hard Boiled - arguably the best film in his career, and certainly one of the best action thrillers of all time - and found the transition to Hollywood difficult, not least because of the restrictions placed upon him, and the emphasis on front-end management by the production studios, but also because of the problems he encountered whilst working with a diva lead actor.
