About this deal

He seems blind to economic and political realities: it’s not clear that he gets the economic point of the non-dom tax rules, and he seems proud of destroying Uber’s business model and of making it more difficult for ordinary Londoners to get taxis late at night.

He mentioned that the reader’s problem pertained to people in communities that are often deprived, which he mentioned earlier on that he fails to connect with anymore because of his place of privilege. This book confirmed my belief that the legal route is the most effective way to hold our politicians accountable. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. However, I don't think anyone bashing the author who's clearly angry at her, has anything factual to say. Today, challenging or holding to account the government doesn’t give rise to debate, it entrenches people’s beliefs. This kind of challenge to a decision from a government or other public body is known as ‘judicial review’ - and it’s the main avenue GLP uses. In New Zealand, the Whanganui River became recognised as a legal person in 2017, under a settlement act that adopted Maori ways of thinking about it as a living whole. To this end, Maugham criticises the British system of drawing lawyers from the legal profession, because lawyers are professionally trained to preserve the public image of neutrality.

The word “Twitter” appears but once in the index of Jolyon Maugham’s memoir cum social action manifesto Bringing Down Goliath. I'm not sure if he mentions his battles with GC women in it because the review doesn't mention it but I thought some people here would like to read the review. The chapters concerning the prorogation of parliament and the ‘nob of’ cases are incredibly fascinating and are the stars of the book. Though the ‘rights for nature’ movement is relatively new in the UK, Maugham points to the idea of companies as legal persons.

In Bringing Down Goliath , he recounts campaigns for public transparency and victims of sexual assault. We need, more than ever, a strong diverse and inclusive judiciary; we undermine the rule of law at our peril. Personally, I do, and have admired Jolyon Maugham since hearing him speak in person during the Remain campaign.
