About this deal

I’m currently on a wait list for the next audio that becomes available through my fine library system. Things many of us can relate to regarding family life, relationships, run-ins with strangers and that sort of juicy stuff.

I won't put in a load of laundry, because the machine is too loud and would drown out other, more significant noises - namely, the shuffling footsteps of the living dead. These short form pieces about his life read like carnival folklore, so seemingly unreal at times it feels surreal.

Sedaris is so good at exposing the frailty of those emotional connections without ever doubting that they can still sustain our relationships. I don’t know if Sedaris really put a fly in a jar and shook it up, which knocked it out so he could put it on a spider web, at which point it woke up, wiggled around and be eaten. Much of Sedaris' humor is autobiographical and self-deprecating, and it often concerns his family life, his middle class upbringing in the suburbs of Raleigh, North Carolina, Greek heritage, various jobs, education, drug use, homosexuality, and his life in France with his partner, Hugh Hamrick. I've listened to him enough now that I can not only read his work in his voice, but also accurately guess at the necessary inflection in new material.I opted to schedule a mental health vacay day instead and went home to immerse myself in my favorite type of therapy this time of year – decorating Christmas trees (with an added bonus of listening to the soothing sounds of David’s dysfunction this go ‘round). I will tell you, audio is the ONLY way to go when it comes to stories about the youngest Sedaris – be it David or Amy’s impersonation, you’ll be hard-pressed not to look like a hysterical maniac if driving while listening. In an era when US satire is outpacing our own he's a sharp, humane and hilarious voice that never fails to make you smile - and sometimes weep. Prepare yourself for utter hilarity, and once again I highly recommend audio because there really is nothing like listening to Sedaris read his books. His life is extraordinary in so many ways - the drug addiction, the eccentric family, the crazy jobs, the fame, the globetrotting - but one of the more unlikely achievements here is in making it all seem quite ordinary.

Sedaris came to prominence in 1992 when National Public Radio broadcast his essay "SantaLand Diaries. My sister's the type who religiously watches the fear segments of her local Eyewitness News broadcasts, retaining nothing but the headline. I stand by the 5 Star rating - my love for David, Amy and especially "The Rooster" as well as the annual re-listening to the "6 to 8 Black Men.

Even while in a stupid ass Fiat rather than a Volkswagen since mine decided to die like a whore on the corner a few months back. These are scenes of family life at its best, written with clarity but also with great affection, through which the character of the author emerges, watchful, self-mocking and full of understanding.

It's not that I don't like her - far from it - I just worry that, without a regular job and the proper linoleum, she'll fall through a crack and disappear to a place where we can't find her. Sedaris is so great at showing that most of our love for each other doesn’t lie in our similarities, but in the strength of our shared history and our sheer will to maintain the relationship. And if you already know and love The Rooster, man are you in for a treat when Sedaris reads in Paul’s voice. Stories of himself as the odd and awkward kid growing up and trying to figure out how to live in this world.
