About this deal

I did like them but they do pale a bit in comparison, only because they have some similarities with the Outlander series. DG takes way too long to produce the next volume, so in the meantime, if you don't force yourself to read someone else's worthy works, you are just cheating yourself. Reminded me somewhat of Outlander, although not quite so steamy ( that one has a lot of sexual scenes).

Addendum: when I went to find an image to go with this post, I discovered that there are more books about these characters — many.I for one don't want to read about the end of characters like Diana's who I have become very attached to. Set in a remote, mountainous New York village, in a United States that has only just won its independence, Into the Wilderness is the story of Elizabeth Middleton, recently of England. And she meets a man unlike any she has ever encountered - a white man dressed like a Native American, Nathanial Booner, known to the Mohawk people as Between-Two-Lives. This is a series that has been recommended to many times but I am yet to delve into it yet – one day I hope to.

Not only does a Gabaldon quote appear on the front-cover of ‘Into the Wilderness’, but Donati thanks Gabaldon in her acknowledgements. A new series based on later generations of the same families was launched September 1, 2015 with The Gilded Hour.I wish there had been an epilogue, I fee like there is so much more to see and read and I'm struggling with how long I have to wait until I find out what Nathaniel and Elizabeth get up to next.

If you have read (or watched) Last of the Mohicans, several of the characters in this book will be familiar to you, which was fun. Outlander’ is one of my all-time favourite novels, and like so many of her fans I find myself needing a reading supplement to tide me over between Gabaldon’s four year long writing lapses. Ive recommended to these books to so many people and have been successful in in getting them interested in reading again. This is about Nathaniel and Elizabeth – everything else is backdrop and obstacles to their happiness. Into the Wilderness is one of those rare stories that let you breathe the air of another time, and leave your footprints on the snow of a wild, strange place. This thin relation to ‘Outlander’ would have guaranteed Gabaldon readers would make the trek to Donati’s series, which is the reason I picked up ‘Into the Wilderness’. To save the Mountain and preserve the heritage of the Mohawks, Nathaniel and Elizabeth devise their own scheme to get control of the land. I think Diana Gabaldon has more writing finesse; her series is more grand-scale epic and she revels in a slow-as-molasses storytelling that lets layers unfold, cliff-hangers erupt and characters arcs naturally progress. Maybe if I hadn't already been spoiled by the greatness of the Outlander Series I would have enjoyed this more.
