Given that the Flip 5 is a past What Hi-Fi? Award winner, it will come as little surprise to learn that the Flip 6 is another resoundingly five-star product. We might have thought we’d be advising JBL to rework the Flip by now – add a few more features, change it up a bit to keep up with the competition – but instead, we are left praising the sonic chops of a proposition that offers extra durability (it is now IP67 water- and dust-proof, over the waterproof-only IPX7 Flip 5) as well as an extra ounce of space within its trademark zealous and musical presentation.Yes, it's still 'just' a Bluetooth speaker – but what a great-sounding Bluetooth speaker it is. If you want more from the midrange and less from the treble, you can now tweak it thanks to a new EQ feature in the app, which adds significant value. For a nominal price hike over the launch price of the Flip 5, there’s certainly more detail here, too.
In terms of outright volume, the speaker gives a little ground to the larger Harman Kardon Citation 200 (p68), but is solid nevertheless. The presentation strikes a great balance between a room-filling spread and avoiding feeling diffuse and confused, and it's no less capable when pressed into service with TV material. Dali has implemented a TWS (True Wireless Stereo) mode for the Katch G2, enabling users to pair two Katch G2s in stereo for increased volume and separation, with aptX HD to support better-quality streams at 24-bit/48kHz. Note, however, that you cannot stereo pair the first-generation Katch with the new G2 as the feature is facilitated by Bluetooth 5.0, and the original 2016 Katch only supports Bluetooth 4.0. Also, the new TWS mode is not meant to enable multi-room audio – the two Katch G2s should really be in the same room and will play stereo sound. DALI has bolstered the battery life of the Katch to now offer a claimed 30 hours, which is surely more than enough for most users. The driver configuration is the same as before, with a 3.5in bass/mid driver augmented by a passive radiator, plus a 21mm tweeter. Both drivers are fed by their own 25W Class D amp. The excellent industrial design, available in three colours, is also unchanged. Bluetooth is like a short-range, low-powered, low-bandwidth version of wi-fi used to connect compatible devices together rather than to the internet. Bluetooth uses radio waves like wi-fi does but at a different scale. The Award-winning JBL Charge 5 is even more durable and hardwearing than the four Charges that came before it. Its predecessor carried an IPX7 rating, meaning it could handle being submerged in water to a depth of 1.5m, but the IP67-rated Charge 5 builds on that durability by also being fully dustproof.

Portable, Danish Design
Speakers are all about sound. As much as some might question this recommendation based on technology, design and price, my ears told me over and over, with my eyes open and my eyes shut, that the Cleer Scene offered a more natural sound. The original DALI Katch was one of the best Bluetooth speakers in its class. The Katch G2 takes all that’s great about the original – great sound, unique style and long battery life – and makes it even better. Improvements to the sound, connectivity and battery life simply make the best better still. All products are judged on a performance-per-pound basis and, as part of the process, put up against the current class leader(s) at that price point to see how they compare and to help us settle on a star rating. Every extra millimetre gained in internal depth is turned into true low-frequency reproduction, letting the woofer generate bass with only slight help from the DSP. Despite the limited baffle surface area, the woofer membrane is a relatively large 3.5. The outward turned cone is constructed from an aluminium membrane with a soft fabric dust cap. The stiff aluminium cone allows the woofer to move as much air a possible even at mid-range frequencies, and the combination of aluminium and fabric works to lower surface resonances, retaining detail and clarity.
