Kennedy’s stories and personal experiences make it clear that he knows exactly what he’s talking about. What was really useful was to hear someone say what I’d been saying, that you can’t think your way out of anxiety. Dr Russell Kennedy is a medical doctor, neuroscientist, and someone who suffered with crippling anxiety for over 30 years. I don’t begrudge him the potential of these drugs, but a lot of his musings about it feel esoteric and not particularly grounded in reality.

My dad has always lovingly helped me with my own anxiety and I have learned more about relieving it from him than from any other means bar none.ONLY talking about our challenges just adds to the incessant internal mental chatter we already are suffering from, but by going into the soma/body too, this allows us to discharge the energy/past experience which is fuelling the anxious thoughts, thus truly breaking anxiety loops we are stuck in. It’s not short term hacks it’s a compassionate understanding of self with real approaches to manage. I now see that my ego was playing a long con on me—building up the hope of rescue through external and grandiose validation only for the fantasy to never manifest, leaving me feeling humiliated, rejected and inevitably despondent.

If you are fortunate enough not to have anxiety, you will gain a better insight and appreciation for those who live with it daily.As I said, there was value in his personal experiences - but if your anxieties manifest in different ways, his failure to use enough meaningful, detailed examples from people other than himself starts to make it hard to relate to. I must warn for any eye rollers, some of the jokes in the best possible way, will bring the eye rolls right on.
